Regards Croisés 2021

Marseille FIlm festival

Between April and June 2021, James had the privilege of taking part in the Regards Croisés program, hosted by the Aubagne International Film Festival. The program was designed to facilitate collaboration and the sharing of ideas and perspectives between students of 4 European film music programmes, of which Thinkspace Education was one.

Initially, each participant was tasked with presenting a short demo for each of the three short films - generously provided to the hosts by previous attendees of the festival - to promote a conversation around scoring approaches, and film music in general. These three demos can be found in the playlist on this page.

They were then split into 3 groups, each of which had the responsibility of re-scoring the whole short film, in preparation for a live ciné-concert, in which an ensemble of 9 musicians would perform the final score live alongside the film. This concert then was hosted on the 12th June 2021, which was broadcast via live stream, due to covid restrictions at the time. It went spectacularly well, and the musicians and conductor involved did a fantastic job of realising the music.

James’ group had the film “Untravel”, for which he contributed the final scene’s score: a mockup of this scene’s score can be found in the playlist on this page. He was also responsible for the preparation of the final score and parts for the conductor and musicians respectively.
